Departing from the Traditional Administrative Workflows to Realize Better Healthcare Outcomes at Scale

Cognizant has officially launched a set of new healthcare large language model (LLM) solutions on Google Cloud’s generative AI (genAI) technology, including the company’s Vertex AI platform and Gemini models. Although slightly unique in what they bring to the table, each solution coming into play here is designed to streamline administrative processes, accelerate the speed of operations, and significantly improve upon the quality of care and services delivered to members. In essence, the stated development will focus on four high-cost workflows: marketing operations, call center operations (including appeals and grievances), provider management, and contracting. Talk about how it will make something productive out of this focus, the answer begins from an all-new appeals resolution assistant, who comes bearing the ability to completely automate data retrieval, analysis, and interpretation in the context of healthcare appeals management. Further boasting the knowhow to simplify subjective and error-prone manual processes, the assistant in question also makes to point to enhance productivity, consistency, and accuracy around the given area. Next up, we must get into the presence of a comprehensive contract management solution. This solution, in particular, leverages automated review, generation, and configuration processes to optimize the healthcare contract lifecycle management. Considering the automation aspect, one can expect the solution to eliminate manual errors, reduce inconsistencies, and boost productivity, thus setting the stage for users to decrease contracting cycle time without causing any hiccups across the operational quality.

“The healthcare industry has an opportunity to apply AI to deliver more efficient and effective experiences for all stakeholders,” said Amy Waldron, Director, Healthcare and Life Sciences Industry at Google Cloud. “These new tailored solutions from Cognizant, utilizing Google Cloud’s AI platform and Gemini models, can help reduce administrative burden, and streamline manual tasks in areas like contracting, operations, appeals, and more. Solutions like these not only improve operational efficiency, but also they can have a significant impact on satisfaction and access to care.”

Moving on, Cognizant is also poised to bring forth a marketing content assistant, who will effectively empower healthcare payer marketing teams by automating the creation of engaging content across various topics, including product launches, corporate initiatives, thought leadership, and strategic partnerships. Again, thanks to the automation angle, this marketing content assistant should be able to streamline content generation, and therefore, facilitate consistent, high-quality communication to strengthen the payer’s brand presence and reputation. Rounding up highlights would be a dedicated health plan shopper. Like the name might suggest, Cognizant’s new health plan shopper is capable of empowering healthcare members to make informed plan choices. This they can do by combining individual preferences, clinical profiles, and payer data. Not just that, with an ability to integrate disparate information sources, this innovative solution will streamline plan selection, and at the same time, contribute to an enhanced overall healthcare experience.

“GenAI’s impact on managing health and delivering care can be significant, potentially improving how things work today and helping to design innovative new paradigms,” said Rohan Kulkarni, executive research leader of healthcare practice at HFS. “The solutions Cognizant and Google Cloud developed to address the challenges imposed by healthcare administrative workflows could have a significant impact on both operational cost profile as well as consumer experiences. These are outcomes anyone would welcome.”

This new development jointly-led by Cognizant and Google Cloud delivers a rather interesting follow-up to Google awarding the former “2024 Industry Solution Services Partner of the Year – Healthcare and Life Sciences” in recognition of its success driving digital transformations with healthcare and life sciences customers who use Google Cloud technologies, including AI.
